Welcome to the Institute of Gender and Development Studies (IGDS), at Makerere University, which brings together the Department of Gender Studies, Department of Development Studies and the Centre for Communication Skills. Our Institute is dedicated to advancing social justice through rigorous, context-driven research and engagement in the field of Gender and Development.
We recognise the limitations of traditional development paradigms, particularly those shaped by Northern dominance and externally imposed frameworks. Our approach is grounded in the development of theory from the Global South – locally driven, context-specific knowledge that challenges historical inequalities and the elitism of mainstream research. We aim to democratise knowledge by ensuring it is accessible, relevant, and responsive to the communities it is meant to serve. That way, Africa will cease being a mere consumer of Western-generated knowledge.
The Institute strives to bridge the gap between theory and practice. We are committed to building strong partnerships with local communities, global scholars, and grassroots organisations, to foster collaborative research, training, and advocacy.
Our goal is to inspire inclusive and equitable leadership, particularly among younger generations. Studying gender and development is an ongoing and evolving journey. At the Institute of Gender and Development Studies, we are proud to be part of that journey and to contribute meaningfully to global and local social justice efforts.
Our work focuses on the complex intersections of gender and development, with race, class, sexuality, and power, particularly within postcolonial and global South contexts. We are deeply committed to addressing pressing issues such as under development, war and conflict, cliamte change, gender-based violence, barriers to women's leadership, the disadvantaged position of female learners, and the need for gender-sensitive educational policy and practice.
