The widespread adoption of mobile money services (MMS) across sub-Saharan Africa has unquestionably improved financial access, benefiting both rural and urban populations. Nevertheless, despite its clear advantages, the uptake of mobile money has encountered some hurdles, particularly related to security concerns and system challenges.
The Digital Health Payment Initiative focuses on generating evidence regarding the use of digital payments among campaign health workers. Fraud has been identified as a critical issue, however so far our research has indicated that there is a risk of fraud and fear of fraud but we have not found significant evidence of fraud related to digital payment of health workers. This prompts two crucial questions: How common is fraud during digital payment of health workers and how can we reduce fraud while paying health workers digitally.
